山崎悠人 「#彫り物 #乗り物 / #sculpture #vehicle 」

光灯では、山崎悠人の個展「#彫り物 #乗り物/#sculpture #vehicle」を10月24日（木）から11月23日（土）まで開催いたします。

山崎悠人は1983年生まれ、現在福岡県うきは市を拠点に活動している彫刻家です。本展では約2年前から制作してきた「乗り物」をモチーフにした木彫作品を初めて展示します。山崎が一つの目標としてきたという100点の乗り物を一堂にご覧いただける機会となります。

山崎の代表的な作品に、観葉植物をモチーフにした彫刻があります。植物は20代後半、彫刻制作に行き詰まりを感じた際に「アートが好きだ」という思いから、自身の部屋にアート的なものを取り入れたいと考えたことがきっかけでした。インテリアとして人気の観葉植物を選び、試しに木彫でつくり始めたところ、次第にその数が増えていきました。当初は、観葉植物を作ることにコンセプトを見出していましたが、作品が増えるにつれ、自我が薄れていく感覚を覚えました。「彫刻を日常に取り入れる」というシンプルな発想を発端に、アカデミーと実社会の距離感、そして制作を続ける難しさや経済的な課題も実感しました。

また、無心になって彫刻を続けるなかで、自分の深い意識や感情が作品に純粋に反映されることを実感していったと言います。大学で彫刻を志した頃に感じたという、彫刻そのものが放つ、つくり手の意識やオーラという力をあらためて認識しました。

本展で発表する車のモチーフは、自身の愛車を彫ったことがきっかけでした。以降、映画に登場するスーパーカーやインターネット上の写真をもとに想像を織り交ぜながら、自身に無理のない範囲の手元で完結するようにして丁寧に彫り続けてきました。100台という途方ない数は、山崎が植物を彫りながら見つけた、彫刻の持つ力をあらためて感じられる新シリーズとなります。

そして、本展のタイトル「彫り物」は、挽き物や焼き物、曲げ物など、日本ならではの歴史を持つ言葉であり、山崎の哲学を表す一端となります。自身の生き様そのものが作品となればいいと言う山崎が、真摯に向き合ってきた彫刻の最新作を、ぜひご高覧ください。

Kohtoh will be hosting a solo exhibition by Yuto Yamasaki, titled "#sculpture #vehicle," from October 24 (Thu) to November 23 (Sat), 2024.

Born in 1983, Yuto Yamasaki is a sculptor currently based in Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This exhibition will feature his first presentation of wood sculptures inspired by "vehicles," a theme he has been developing for approximately two years. The exhibition gathers 100 vehicle sculptures, a milestone Yamasaki has set for himself, in one unified display.

Among Yamasaki's most iconic works are sculptures inspired by houseplants. He began creating these pieces in his late twenties, during a period of creative stagnation. Wanting to incorporate art into his surroundings, he began carving plants in wood, gradually amassing a collection. Although the concept initially revolved around creating houseplants, over time he felt a sense of detachment from his individual identity, experiencing a shift in focus towards a vision of “integrating sculpture into daily life.” This approach highlighted the distance between academia and everyday society and underscored the challenges of maintaining an artistic practice, both financially and creatively.

As he worked on these pieces, he found that the act of carving allowed his deeper consciousness and emotions to surface naturally, a phenomenon he first experienced during his university years when he felt the power of a sculptor's intent and aura imbued in each piece.

The vehicle theme for this exhibition was inspired by a carving of his own car. From there, Yamasaki began sculpting a series of vehicles, referencing everything from movie supercars to online images. He carefully balanced imagination and reality, carving each piece meticulously within his means. This collection of 100 vehicles represents a rediscovery of the compelling force of sculpture, which he first encountered during his houseplant series.

The exhibition title, "Hori-mono" (sculpture), refers to traditional Japanese crafts such as woodworking, pottery, and lacquerware, embodying Yamasaki's artistic philosophy.
