KINJO・広瀬 陽「VOID」

このたび光灯では、KINJOと広瀬陽による2人展「VOID」を開催いたします。

東京出身の2人は高校時代に先輩後輩として知り合い、卒業後は他のメンバーも含めたアートユニットとしてともに活動した時期もありましたが、現在はそれぞれの表現を追求し、KINJOは主に現代美術の分野で、広瀬は工芸の分野で活躍しています。

本展の企画は、広瀬が器作家として活動するいっぽうで続けてきた、様々な創作が発端となっています。今回広瀬が発表するのは新作シリーズ「ghost」です。本作は、広瀬が路上観察のなかで目に留まったオブジェクトを白い布で覆い隠し撮影した写真を転写した版画と、その軌跡を記録したZINEを今回の表現媒体とします。

KINJOは広瀬の「ghost」の制作からいくつかのキーワード“路上”“隠す”“存在”など自身の作品にも共通するテーマを拾い出し、ペインティングを主体とした新たな作品へと拡張します。

本展のタイトル「VOID」は、2人の作品に通底するテーマから名付けられました。日本語で空虚、がらんどう、隙間、役に立たないといった意味を持つこのワードが示すのは、裏を返せば目に見えなくともそこに確かに存在するものがあるという、2人の思考を象徴する言葉となっています。

本展では、2人が互いの作品を含む日々のやりとりや生活からインスピレーションを受け、それに呼応するかたちで制作した新作を発表します。

アーティスト・ステートメント

void : 中身がない・空っぽの・役に立たない・効果がない」といった形容詞、および「空間・空っぽ・すき間・虚空・むなしさ・喪失感・孤独感」といった名詞、そして「無効にする・空にする・排泄する」といった動詞の意味を持つ英単語である。

KINJO

2019年の初個展から5年間器作家として活動をしてきました。その一方で器以外の制作もひっそりと続けていました。器の制作がA面。器以外の制作はB面。そんな意識でこの5年間は常にA面が表の状態でした。今回KINJOがA面とB面をひっくり返す機会を作ってくれました。ありがとう。展示作品はghostシリーズと呼んでいる平面作品です。この作品は7つの手順を踏んで制作します。（1）街を散策する （2）特定のオブジェクトを見つける （3）オブジェクトに白い布をかける（4）③を写真に納め収集する （5）収集した写真からイメージを作る（6）イメージを版に起こす（7）版を刷る以上の工程を経て完成した作品はどこか自画像のようだと思いました。

Kohtoh is pleased to present "VOID," a two-person exhibition by KINJO and Hirose You.

Both artists, originally from Tokyo, first met as senior and junior in high school. After graduation, they worked together as part of an art collective with other members for a period of time. However, each has since pursued their own artistic path—KINJO primarily in contemporary art and Hirose in the field of crafts.

This exhibition originated from Hirose's ongoing creative explorations outside his practice as a ceramic artist. His new series, "ghost," will be showcased in this exhibition. The works in this series consist of prints featuring images of objects Hirose encountered during his street observations, concealed under white cloth, along with a self-published book that documents this process.

Drawing inspiration from "ghost," KINJO extracts key themes such as "street," "concealment," and "existence"—concepts that also resonate within his own practice. Through this dialogue, he expands upon these ideas, presenting new works centered around painting.

The exhibition title, "VOID," is derived from a shared underlying theme in both artists' works. The word "void" in Japanese conveys meanings such as emptiness, hollowness, gaps, or something seemingly useless. However, in contrast, it also implies the presence of something invisible yet undeniably there—an idea that encapsulates the perspectives of both artists.

Artist Statements
"Void" is an English word that carries multiple meanings. As an adjective, it signifies “empty, hollow, useless, or ineffective.” As a noun, it refers to “space, emptiness, gap, void, futility, sense of loss, or loneliness.” As a verb, it means “to nullify, to empty, or to expel.”

For the past five years, I have been working as a ceramic artist, ever since my first solo exhibition in 2019. At the same time, I have quietly continued making works beyond ceramics. If ceramics were my Side A, these other works were my Side B—and for these five years, Side A had always been the one facing outward.

This time, KINJO has given me the opportunity to flip Side A and Side B. Thank you.

The works presented in this exhibition belong to my ghost series, a body of two-dimensional pieces. Each work in this series follows a seven-step process:

1.Walk through the city

2.Discover a particular object

3.Drape the object with a white cloth

4.Photograph and document the covered object

5.Develop an image from the collected photographs

6.Transfer the image onto a printmaking plate

7.Print the image

After going through these steps, I realized that each finished piece feels like a self-portrait in its own way.
